Joining MethaneMIP
Contributions have been pledged from at least ten modeling centers, and the project remains open to further groups. A participating model contributes three sets of concentration driven simulations: the SSP2-4.5 reference, the Technical Measures scenario and the Ambitious scenario, with five to ten ensemble members each over 2020 to 2050.
The runs use the same model version and configuration the group used for its original CMIP6 SSP2-4.5 simulations, so in most cases the reference members already exist. Methane concentrations are prescribed from the MethaneMIP forcing datasets in whichever format matches how the group handled SSP2-4.5, whether global-mean, zonally averaged or fully gridded, annual or monthly.
Models without interactive atmospheric chemistry are welcome. They run once the chemistry models have produced enough simulations for the ozone forcing to be derived, and are supplied with ozone fields that already include the effect of methane mitigation.
Groups with emissions driven capability are encouraged to add the flagship experiments, and groups with spare computing time to extend a subset of runs to 2070. Neither is a condition of taking part.
